Environments of the Black-chinned Tilapia, Sarotherodon Melanotheron, and Their Potential Effects on the Genetic Structure of Stocks in Ghana OceanDocs
Abban, E.K.; Asante, A.K.; Falk, T.M..
Ghana is one of the countries bordering theAtlantic Ocean on the coast of Africa. The country is located between latitudes 5" N and11" N and longitudes 1" E and 3" W Thecoastline of Ghana, approximately 550 kmlong, is dotted with about 50 lagoons andestuaries that, together with rocky capes and avariety of sandy bays, constitute its coastalwetlands (Armah 1993). These lagoons, estuaries and associated floodplains providehabitats for a variety of wildlife including birdsand fishes (Ntiamoa-Baidu 1991). With an estimated 40 000 ha surface area, the lagoonsare important fish and fisheries resources forassociated communities. The fish speciescomposition of these lagoons varies slightly, but a constant and predominant species is theblack-chinned tilapia,...

Use of MEDITS trawl survey data and commercial fleet information for the assessment of some Mediterranean demersal resources ArchiMer
Abella, Alvaro; Belluscio, Andrea; Bertrand, Jacques; Carbonara, Pier Luigi; Giordano, Daniela; Sbrana, Mario; Zamboni, Ada.
An assessment of the state of the fisheries of hake, red mullet and Norway lobster was carried out by using trawl survey data from the MEDITS research programme. The assessment was performed by means of the application of a composite model utilising the total mortality rate Z as a direct index of fishing effort. The studied area covered the whole western Italian coast (Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas) and the eastern coasts of Corsica. The area was divided into twelve sub-areas, considered to be of similar ecological characteristics with similar initial productivity but considered to experience different rates of exploitation. Available information on fishing fleets and their geographic distribution was used in creating sub-areas. For each one of these...

Stock Assessment and Management of Dilplodus: Speciee in Abu Qir Bay, Alexadria, Egypt OceanDocs
Adam, Adel Mohamed Saleh.
The present study deals with the fisheries of two Sparid fish species in Abu Qir Bay. Family Sparidae represents about 17 % of the landed catch from the Bay. Among the family; genus Diplodus is generally caught by trammel nets, beach and purse seines but mostly by longlines. Two species of this genus were considered here for study. They are namely D. sargus and D. vulgaris where they represent by about 4.2% of the landed catch during the year 2008 in the Bay (GAFRD, 2008). The length weight relationship of both species under study showed a value of exponent “b” of very slight negative allometry. Analysis of the catch length structure of the two species revealed that the catch of D. sargus is composed of 21 length groups, the least length was 7.5 cm and the...

Modelo de optimización para el cálculo de la cuota de captura de langostino amarillo OceanDocs
Albornoz, V.; Canales, C.; Fazzi, R..
This paper presents a nonlinear optimization model that use to establish an annual quota for the total allowable catch for managing the yellow squat lobster fishery. The proposed bioeconomic model maximizes the economic profits of the activity involved and, simultaneously, takes into account the long-term conservation of the resource by restricting catches and thereby assuring adequate biomass level in the future. The dynamic behavior of the population is incorporated through a single-specie logistic growth model. Parameters (e.g., growth rate, maximun population and ish eort) were estimated based on a sampling technique using historical biomass reports and fishing yields. The results obtained with this methodology are shown, as is their application in...

Comparison of methods for stock assessment of European hake Merluccius merluccius in the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern mediterranean) ArchiMer
Aldebert, Yvonne; Recasens, Laura.
European hake Merluccius merluccius is the main commercial demersal species in the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern Mediterranean). This fish is exploited by French and Spanish trawler fleets and by small-scale fisheries using gillnets and longlines. Data on landings and the demography of catches by type of gear are now available for the period 1988-1991. The assessment of the hake stock was carried out using methods of virtual population analysis (VPA), or cohort analysis, based respectively on mean pseudocohorts and cohorts by age. The results of these VPA were then analysed and compared from a methodological point of view. The general results have confirmed previous studies with regard to the level of exploitation of the species. The two methods gave quite...

Développement d’un cadre Bayésien pour l’évaluation de stocks à données limitées et élaboration de scénarios de gestion, cas particuliers de la seiche (Sepia officinalis) et du lieu jaune (Pollachius pollachius) ArchiMer
Alemany, Juliette.
The assessment and the management of sh stocks aim at achieving a sustainable exploitation of the resources provided by the oceans. While progress have been made in this eld for some stocks of great commercial importance, the situation is di erent for the so-called "data limited" stocks. Often historically less exploited, these stocks do not  benefit from the same economical resources nor workforce to conduct the stock assessments required to set management measures. This work is based on two case studies, pollack (Pollachius pollachius) and cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis). The aim is to investigate the stock assessment methods adapted to data-limited situations. A first introductive part presents the background of fish stock assessment as well as the two...

Stock assessment of the English Channel stock of cuttlefish with a two-stage biomass model ArchiMer
Alemany, Juliette; Foucher, Eric; Rivot, Etienne; Vigneau, Joel; Robin, Jean-paul.
Among the English Channel fishery, the importance of cuttlefish stock has increased, following the cephalopods global landings and market trend. The stock is currently managed at regional scale but not by European regulations, although it is a shared species targeted by French and British fishing fleets at several stages of its life-cycle and across much of its distributional range. An assessment of this stock was conducted in June 2014 by fitting a two-stage biomass model on a 22 years’ time-series (1992-2013). We present the last update of cuttlefish stock assessment using the same model on years 1992-2014. As the outputs of the model are sensitive to a fix growth parameter, we explore possibilities to improve the model. The use of a Bayesian framework...

Update of the English Channel cuttlefish stock assessment with a Bayesian two-stage biomass model. ArchiMer
Alemany, Juliette; Rivot, Etienne; Foucher, Eric; Vigneau, Joel; Robin, Jean-paul.
A two-stage biomass model is developed in the Bayesian framework that allows us to assimilate various sources of information. A method that makes use of ancillary length frequency data is developed to provide an informative prior distribution for the intrinsic biomass growth rate parameter and its annual variability. The new Bayesian model provides substantial improvement to the existing stock assessment method used by ICES. Considering a time-varying g parameter improves model fit and improves the ecological realisms of the model according to the sensitivity of the cuttlefish population dynamics to environmental fluctuations. We present results of the English Channel cuttlefish stock assessment updated with the new Bayesian model. The model also provides...

Adult-mediated connectivity affects inferences on population dynamics and stock assessment of nursery-dependent fish populations ArchiMer
Archarnbault, Benoit; Le Pape, Olivier; Baulier, Loic; Vermard, Youen; Veron, Matthieu; Rivot, Etienne.
We explore how alternative hypotheses on the degree of mixing among local subpopulations affect statistical inferences on the dynamics and stock assessment of a harvested flatfish population, namely, the common sole population in the Eastern Channel (ICES area VIId). The current paradigm considers a single, well-mixed, spatially homogeneous population with juveniles from all coastal nursery grounds along the French and UK coasts that contribute to a single adult population and one pool of eggs. Based on the available data and ecological knowledge, we developed a spatial Bayesian integrated life-cycle model that consists of three subpopulations (one near the UK coast and two near the French coast, denoted UK, West FR and East FR, respectively) supported by...

As part of a larger project financed by the European Union programme "Community initiative PESCA" on the study of "small scale fisheries" in Aquitaine (France), an estimation of the stock of clams in the Bassin d'Arcachon has been conducted. A two-stage stratified random sampling survey has been designed. Samples have been collected using a Hamon bottom sampler in 237 locations distributed over 24 km2. The clam Tapes philippinarum, which appeared in the basin following a series of aquaculture experiments in the mid eighties, is now the main species accounting for more than 90% of the abundance and the biomass, largely overcoming the European species Tapes decussata. The mean abundance and biomass (26 clams / m2 et l28g / m2) are above those estimated in...

Consequences of bias in age estimation on assessment of the northern stock of European hake (Merluccius merluccius) and on management advice ArchiMer
Bertignac, Michel; De Pontual, Helene.
The results of a pilot tagging study on hake (Merluccius merluccius), conducted in the northern part of the Bay of Biscay in 2002, indicate that growth rates for this stock may be currently underestimated because of biased estimates of age. The impact that such a bias may have on the stock dynamics and the trends of the key population parameters, recruitment, spawning-stock biomass (SSB), and mortality are investigated. Assuming new growth parameters, a new age-length key is derived and used to produce and catch-at-age data and abundance indices, which are then used to assess the stock. Bias in estimating age affects the absolute levels of fishing mortality and stock biomass estimates, and also impacts the trend in SSB. However, trends in fishing mortality...

Síntesis de las evaluaciones y sugerencias de manejo efectuadas sobre el recurso merluza (Merluccius hubbsi) entre el año 1986 y mayo de 1997. OceanDocs
Bezzi, S.I..
Hake (Merluccius hubbsi) stock assessments and management recommendations made as of 1986 for the Argentine Sea, are summarized. The surplus production models used allowed to diagnose an overdimensioned fleet and to establish that, as of 1983, population densities were lower than the optimum values. In 1990 it was mentioned that total landings exceeded the Maximum Sustainable Yield and that the fishing effort was above the optimum exploitation level. The Virtual Population Analysis was first applied in 1993 and, for the 1986-1991 period, a 25. increase in fishing mortality, significant reductions of total and reproductive biomasses and a first catch length of 25 cm were detected. Besides, proposals were made to enhance accuracy of future assessments. In...
